Overview
Adolescence involves rapid physical, cognitive, and emotional changes brought on by puberty. Those changes influence adolescents’ behaviors, interests, and how they approach their world. One of the most dramatic changes relates to sexual maturity, which can be marked in many ways. For boys, having regular nocturnal emissions of semen (wet dreams) marks the beginning of puberty. Despite the focus on boys’ nocturnal emissions, girls also can experience their equivalent (sexual lubrication). Although these emissions are viewed as normal, cultural differences exist in how they are perceived and experienced.

Adolescence involves many forms of development, with pubertal development being the most physically obvious.
